How about the US Open at Merion? Too tough or too tricked up? Probably a little bit of both but the most interesting statistic I saw was that only 6 of the top 20 finishers took less than 120 putts (30 per round) for the week. That is astounding, given that 167 players on the PGA Tour average less than 30 putts per round. Was Merion defended by extreme hole locations? We’ll never know for sure, but it was great theater and the Sunday leaderboard was spectacular even without Tiger Woods and despite another heartbreaker for Phil Mickleson.
